Trip to the Gulfarium in FWB Florida

No sailing today on January 7, 2012, but we did see dolphins. We took a trip over to Fort Walton Beach via car to the Florida Gulfarium and were treated to some great shows; Blake even had the chance to feed and pet a dolphin. If you’ve never been, it is worth a visit. We’ll [...]

Book: The Living Great Lakes

“Sailing is Victory. Victory over the wind, which can kill you. Victory over the sea, which can kill you a lot quicker. Over the boat, over the sails, over your own limitations. Sailing joins elemental forces in opposition, and lets you ride them. The illusion is created that you’ve harnessed the elements. You’ve thrown reins [...]

Mirror mirror on the wall, who has the smoothest bottom of all?

I will begin by blaming Ken of s/v Private Stock. Ken apparently started an epidemic when he hauled Private Stock to paint the bottom and get her ship shape for Summer. We all admired the clean bottom Private Stock presented and listened to Ken brag about the speed increase he achieved after paint. So… We [...]

You may recall past posts including ‘The Great Escape’ where pictures [...]

Blake the Pirate

OK, so it isn’t Monomoy, but it was cute. Blake has a boat wheel given to him by our friend Joe. He made his own sail and set it up on his bed and had a make believe pirate ship.

Standard Horizons VHF

For those who routinely read our blog you may have noted where during our Feb. 6 sail it was mentioned that our handheld VHF popped off and fell into the bay. The VHF was a $150 Standard Horizon brand and was just under a year old. We didn’t intend to mention what product it was [...]

What’s in a name?

Often while at anchorage other boaters will dinghy over to us and inquire as to the origin of Monomoy’s name. When our Ship’s Boatswain, Blake, was 4 years old, he had a favorite book for us to read to him called “Ghost Ship”, which was just released that year. This book was bestselling storyteller Mary [...]
